HEAP's Distance Learning Course
Online courses are increasing in popularity, especially with time and travel constraints.
The purpose of the distance learning course is to provide states with efficient, cost-effective and customizable options for training teachers in skills-based health education and assessment.
The HEAP professional development course includes presentations, supplemental materials, discussion boards, and homework assignments to support teachers’ professional development.
The online course contains 6 modules on a variety of standards-based instruction and assessment topics including:
- Understanding the National Health Education Standards
- Aligning instruction and assessment
- Practice scoring student work with HEAP rubrics
- Developing performance tasks
States can modify and adapt the modules, or use their own content, to meet their specific needs. Modules can be utilized with existing learning management systems. The HEAP also offers members use of the Sakai Open Source Learning Management System if needed.
Example of Distance Learning Online Practice for Scoring Student Work
Teachers being trained in assessment will have a unit on scoring student work. For practice, teachers can make use of an online practice scoring session.
To demonstrate some of the more interactive features available in the course, try your skill at scoring student work with the link below. You will be presented with 4 samples of student work that address the same prompt. Access the available scoring guide, and 4-point rubric and then enter a score of 1, 2, 3 or 4, for each sample. Click the "Finished" button to see how your ratings compare to that of an expert.
